I am a big, HUGE, obsessive, lover and fan of massage!!! Traditions of Health Massage is the place to go if you are in the Idaho Falls area. To some people, massage is an occasional luxury that is a once a year splurge. I have felt and experienced the benefits from incorporating massage and I personally consider it to be a medical necessity and a priority. I am not a massage therapist, but I have a degree in health, teach Anti-Gravity Yoga and have been a recipient of weekly massages over the last year and a half and my opinion is that everyone needs it regularly!
The benefits of massage are well know and have been studied for centuries. According to The University of Maryland Medical Center, deep-tissue massage is more effective for relieving chronic pain than conventional medical remedies and also more affordable. Basic benefits of massage are a boost in immune system, increased serotonin and dopamine (happy hormones) and decrease in cortisol (stress hormone), improves circulation, lowers blood pressure, relaxes muscles, improves sleep, relieves headaches and that is just the surface.
For me, massage is all about the fascia. The fascia in our body is one continuous spiderweb of connective tissue that weaves in and around every bone, muscle, organ, artery and vein holding the body together. If it weren’t for the fascia our body would be a pile of body parts without form and unable to move. Our body works together as a system of pulleys and levers and when one of the links in the spiderweb is broken or damaged it puts more pressure on another area to compensate. When this system is healthy it distributes strain evenly to avoid injury or damage to any one body part. When this system is disrupted it can cause pain, impair mobility and affect overall sense of well being as well as emotional blockages.
Deep tissue massage or myofascial release allows energy and electrical signals from the brain to flow to areas in need through physical touch. It opens up pathways and moves blood flow through the body to help alleviate muscle tension and reduce inflammation causing pain while releasing toxins and boosting white blood cells so that physical and emotional healing can take place. It can take years to store up physical and emotional stress or strain in the muscles so you have to be mindful of this when it comes to massage. You will not be healed in one session and need to be patient with your body to see results through massage.
“To keep the body in
good health is a duty…
otherwise we shall not be able to
keep our mind strong and clear.”
I am living proof of the profound affects that massage can have. After getting regular massage over the last year and a half, I am happier, healthier, stronger, more grounded, more flexible, I sleep better, my emotions and hormones are more balanced than they have ever been, and I have not gotten sick since I started getting massages. As with any alternative medicine it should be used in conjunction with and always approved by your doctor but I think that it can eliminate or reduce a lot of health issues.
I firmly believe that health insurance should cover massage and that EVERYONE would be healthier and happier through regular massage therapy. Some insurances do cover a small portion without you even knowing it. You can also get your physical therapist, chiropractor or physician to prescribe massage therapy for chronic back pain and you may get your health insurance to cover or discount at least some of your sessions. As with any alternative or complementary therapy, the number of covered or discounted sessions may be limited and kept within network. Check with your insurance provider for benefits.

Marie, the owner who opened Traditions of Health Massage in 2009, is super sweet and very knowledgeable . They have 3 licensed massage therapists to help you meet your special needs. I have personally been going to Jessica for the last 6 months and just love her! I typically prefer a man for a therapist because they are stronger but Jessica is excellent for deep tissue massage and has the strongest hands for how petite she is. When you schedule a massage keep in mind that an hour is not a lot of time for your body to be fully worked on. The best massages that I’ve had are the 90 min. or the 2 hour. They offer gift certificates and are open from 930-630 by appointment, but they have always worked with me to get me in around my schedule. I also like that I don’t have to sign a year contract like some Spa’s require.
