“I’m not most kids. I’m Louis Drax. Stuff happens to me that shouldn’t happen, like going on a picnic where you drown”. The first line in this book hooks its teeth into you and immediately offers an intriguing and haunting mystery set in the beautiful mountainous region of Auvergne in central France. This psychological thriller is narrated alternately by Louis, an accident-prone ten-year-old boy and by Dr. Pascal, a psychologist.
The Ninth Life of Louis Drax
The beginning of The Ninth Life of Louis Drax begins with intelligent and precocious Louis falls off of a cliff on his ninth birthday, his Papa goes missing after the accident and his fragile Maman is exhibiting Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Lying in a coma in a clinic in Provence, Louis describes the disturbing story of his life and events leading up to the accident. The optimistic Dr. Pascal becomes consumed with this case to revive Louis from hiding away in his coma. Along the way, he begins to fight feelings of infatuation for Louis’s mother and must piece together their past to uncover hidden truths.
Several troubled characters weave in and out of the book with unsettling twists and turns to keep you guessing in this paranormal suspense. I was not sure what I was getting myself into when I started this book. I almost put it down a few chapters in but pushed through as it is a quick and easy read. The eerie mystery surrounding Louis’s nine lives picked up about half way through despite the child’s potty mouth. Filled with deceit, possession, jealousy and Gothic overtones I wouldn’t recommend this book to everyone but if you enjoyed The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, then you might find this an interesting read.
This book is on my list of Books Turning Movies 2015. The movie for The Ninth Life of Louis Drax comes out later this year and does not have a release date yet, I’m guessing around Halloween which would be a fabulous time to read this book! Thrillers are not normally my typical book or movie of choice but every once in a while I like to indulge and this one was definitely worthy of being on that list. I am intrigued to see how the movie turns out.
