Cinder: Book One of the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer is a young adult sci-fi/dystopian retelling of the fairy tale Cinderella. Cinder, a young cyborg and mechanic, finds herself in the home of an evil stepmother and two stepsisters, having no memory of who she was or where she came from.
The city of New Beijing has been consumed by a horrible plague and is also threatened by war from a civilization that lives on the moon. Through a series of events she becomes confused about who she really is and how she can help the very handsome Prince Kai save his people. The brave Cinder has an inner strength and determination that makes her a very likeable protagonist. She struggles with villains, a love interest and making a tough choice between freedom and honesty.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book but I was pleasantly surprised with every twist and turn. It is clean and fun and Meyer pulls off the story brilliantly. If you are a fan of the t.v. show Once Upon a Time, then this series might intrigue you as The Lunar Chronicles, continues with three more books introducing characters from Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Snow White. This is one of my new favorites, I highly recommend it!
